TOSTAN is a US international organization registered in The Gambia in 2006 and operational in Upper River Region (URR) for the past 12 years. TOSTAN operates its programme in 203 communities in URR trained and supervised by locally-based staff. TOSTAN conducts various trainings in the area of business and enterprise development. These include management of community development funds, micro enterprise formation, management of income generating activities, loan collection and recovery methods, Financial management and records keeping, material management, feasibility studies etc. These trainings are all based on participatory approaches with participants selected from community management committees. They are followed by the disbursement of community development grants in the form of small rotating loans. TOSTAN’s major development partners are UNICEF and Women’s Bureau.
