GTMI started with the training of telecommunications personnel and other technicians from both Government and the private sector in 1963 with funding from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Formal training was commissioned in 1965. The Training Centre (Gamtel Training Centre - GTC) was built in 1992 in Kanifing, which is its current location. With a wider training scope, the name GTC changed to Gambia Telecommunications and Multimedia Institute (GTMI) in 1996.
